Examples of poor conditions at OSU

Following are four concrete examples of the poor existing conditions on and around campus for bicyclists and walkers, as of Winter 2005. Note: this page needs lots of work, including pictures, diagrams, ...

a. Crossing Woodruff and Woody Hayes

Campus is basically fragmented into two by the traffic-friendly design of this east-west road. In particular, crossing Woodruff Ave. between Tuttle Park Pl. and Lane Ave. is harrowing, and crosswalks are far between. Intersections are poorly designed for walkers. more

b. Biking between Upper Arlington and OSU

Lane Ave. is so bicycle unfriendly that commuting from UA is strongly discouraged, even though the corner of Lane Ave. and North Star Ave. is less than 5km from central campus. more

c. Intersection of John Herrick Dr. and Olentangy River Dr.

The traffic-light cycle, right-turn lanes, and multiple crossing points make this an incredibly uncomfortable and unsafe place for pedestrians. The shops and theatres at Lennox Town Center are nearly inaccessible by foot, though the shops are less than a ten-minute walk from Lincoln and Morrill towers. more

d. High St. by bicycle

No bike racks, no street or sidewalk space for bikes. more
